Shab-e-Barat is observed on the night between the 14th and 15th of Sha‘ban , the eighth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. In 2026, this night is expected to be observed on the evening of Wednesday, 4 February , lasting until the next morning (dates may vary slightly depending on moon sighting). What Is Shab-e-Barat? The phrase Shab-e-Barat literally means “the night of salvation/protection” or “the night of forgiveness.” It is a night when many Muslims engage in sincere worship, repent for past sins, and pray for future blessings. Although scholars differ on specific rituals, many traditions emphasize this night as a special opportunity for forgiveness and mercy. The Islamic calendar reflects Allah’s wisdom in nurturing the human soul gradually rather than abruptly. Rajab occupies a distinguished position as one of the four sacred months (al-ashhur al-ḥurum) mentioned explicitly in the Qur’an.
